about

Before forming The Man and The Scientist, The Awesome Black Hole, The Oust, The Subtanks, or Mixed Biscuits, Brad and Josh performed with friend Wes Crawford and sorta-friend Andy Trost in the controversial group Household Items. The group was a real fuckin' treat, performing at Webster open mic nights (then called "Gullies") and in dormitory elevators. Their performance-art shtick was comprised of the principle that they only used things they found in their dorm rooms or on-site (in their flash-mob-like performances around Webster University's campus) to make their music. Their highlight maneuvers included pulling dowel rods across box fans, beating Cheese Puff containers, and rhythmically pulling their fly zippers to create polyrhythmic numbers.

Around the first of May, 2005, Trost recruited Household Items to head into the studio as part of a class project for his Audio 1 course. The result was "The Firetruck Lives," a brief recording of shenanigans utilizing a slinky, pistachio shells, a Pringles can, an AV cart, and other sundry items. This is the only known recording done by the band, and is the first-ever recording upon which King and Schumacher performed together.

Trivia (in the truest sense of the word trivial):

1. Near the end of the track, Brad and Josh accuse one another of being "in sample," with the idea that they will eventually end up saying "urine sample" repeatedly.

2. Given that the track would comprise a hefty amount of a semester grade, the phrase "Give Me An A On This Project" can be heard nearing the climax of the song. This was Trost's attempt to embed a subconscious message to increase his chances of passing. His professor, though amused, only assigned an A-.

3. At the end of the track, when Wes states, "This motherfucker was rattling," he is referring to the AV cart used in the Urine-Sample routine. It can be heard easily at 1:32 in the recording.

4. The conversation at the beginning of the track refers to an assignment in Barry Hufker's Audio 1 course at Webster University. The omission of this section was originally debated heavily between the members, as some were concerned their conversation would make its way back to the professor and get them into trouble.
