about

A chill ambient track of pleasant guitar and field recording.

Before forming The Man And The Scientist or The Awesome Black Hole, Josh and Brad's first jam was an ambient set of spaced-out synth and guitar. The highlight of that jam was a song called "Pong Is My Dad" which appears on the album "Duke Brunch/The Apparatus."

Back To The Beginning was recorded in 2019, revisiting the early days and the important elements that solidified the duo's collaboration. This new song was originally floated as the cornerstone for a larger project, but it seems to have fulfilled what was intended, and so it is a single.

Fun Fact: the two photos used for the track art (Brad in overalls, Josh in a hazmat suit) were taken at the exact moment the phrase "The Man And The Scientist" was created--in fact, the photos were the inspiration for the phrase and eventual band name. The two were in New Orleans for a Katrina relief project in 2007, and had just devised a way to get a toilet full of flooded sewage out of a house (wrapping it in salvaged coaxial cable and sledding the toilet out the living room on a detached door of an armoire, like a tobaggan). Brad threw a smokebomb into the toilet to celebrate, and Josh decided to commemorate the event by taking a series of pictures--"One for the man (click), one for the scientist (click), and one of the apparatus." The last picture serves as the album art for Duke Brunch. So, "Back To The Beginning" revisits the sonic origins of the duo's music as well as the the exact visual moment that TMATS was created.
